GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Sophomore Brianna Frazier broke her own school record in the 400m on Friday afternoon to lead the way for the University of North Florida track and field teams as they split their efforts between the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. and the USF Collegiate Invite in Tampa, Fla.
In Gainesville, Frazier clocked a 52.25 to finish fourth and break her previous record of 52.86 by more than half a second. It is also faster than the time that, up until this weekend, was the fastest in the nation at the Division I level.
Other highlights from the Florida Relays included a new personal record in the 3000m steeplechase from freshman Elle Baker, who clocked a 10:51.82 to finish 10th. Frazier also turned in a top-ten finish in the 200m, finishing in 23.57 seconds to take sixth place.
Juniors Cameron Dickerson and James Post carried the flag for the men in Gainesville, finishing fifth and 17th in 3:48.44 and 3:53.15, respectively.
At the USF Collegiate Invite, both teams turned in solid days.
For the men, freshman Jake Menen (60.66) and sophomore Dante Bouldin (61.63) each set new personal records in the 400m hurdles to finish second and third, respectively. Junior Gilbert Vazquez also recorded a new career-best time in the 3000m steeplechase with a mark of 9:50.43, good for runner-up honors.
On the women's side, the field athletes notched multiple top-ten finishes. Junior Ashley Gonzalez grabbed seventh in the discus (113-06) and fifth in the hammer throw (141-9), while juniors Jennifer Smyth and Natasha Goodwin took second and fourth in the triple jump with marks of 37-11 1/4 and 34-10 1/2, respectively.
Senior Laura Ragland also set a new personal best in the 1500m with a time of 5:01.68, good for sixth place.
The UNF track and field teams will take a weekend off next week before they gear up to host the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track Championships at Hodges Stadium on April 20-21.
