JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Top-seeded University of North Florida women's tennis held off fourth-seeded Stetson 4-2 in the Atlantic Sun Championships semifinals on Saturday afternoon in order to advance to Sunday's title match. The Ospreys will face second-seeded ETSU in Sunday's championship match.
It will be the third-straight year in which UNF and ETSU have met in the title match. In 2010, UNF defeated ETSU 4-1. However, in last year's re-match, it was ETSU that defeated UNF 4-0.
UNF took a 1-0 lead after the doubles competition. Stetson won the first match in doubles play with Diana Bukajeva and Jen Miller taking an 8-5 No. 2 doubles win against
Rebeca Pereira and
Simona Weymar. However, the Ospreys came back to take the last two doubles matches. No. 66
Aline Berkenbrock and
Lorena Aviles posted an 8-3 No. 1 doubles win against Sara Lazarevic and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell.
Danielle Day and
Melanie Aguirre clinched the final doubles point for the Ospreys, holding on for an 8-6 No. 3 doubles victory against Shannon Gunning and Lindsey Cable.
The Ospreys then took the first three points in singles competition. Aviles' 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against Gunning put the Ospreys ahead 2-0. Berkenbrock cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Lazarevic at No 1 singles to give UNF the three-point advantage.
Stetson came back to take the next two points and make it a 3-2 match. Cable rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Weymar at No. 5 singles. Bukajeva also rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles against Aguirre.
However, Day battled back at No. 3 singles to defeat Clarke Tatje to get the match-clinching point. After falling 7-5 in the first set, Day came back to take the last two sets 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Earlier this season, UNF defeated ETSU 6-1 at the UNF Tennis Complex on Mar. 17.
