JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis swept doubles and won five of the six singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over Eastern Kentucky at the UNF Tennis Complex on Thursday.
The day began with
Lorena Aviles and Marine Cunningham cruising to an 8-1 No. 1 doubles win over Kristina Labeja and Melissa Gerritsen. UNF secured the double point when
Melanie Aguirre and
Danielle Day finished next with an 8-5 victory over Milena Poffo and Mercela Jimenez at No. 3 doubles. Meanwhile, an 8-4 No. 2 doubles victory by
Simona Weymar and
Rebeca Pereira over Amandine Faouzi and Saioa Oscoz gave the Ospreys the doubles sweep.
In singles, Aviles won by retirement against Faouzi at No. 1 and Day picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Labeja at No. 2 singles. Weymar posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gerritsen at No. 4 singles. Aguirre battled to a 7-6 (5) win over Poffo in the first set at No. 5 singles and then posted a 6-2 victory in the second. At No. 6 singles, Cuningham went 6-4, 6-0 against Jimenez.
The Colonels lone win was a three-set victory at No. 3 singles. Pereira jumped out to an early lead by winning the first set 6-1, but Eastern Kentucky's Oscoz rallied to take the final two sets 7-5, 11-9.
UNF is back in action on Saturday when the Ospreys face Troy in a doubleheader with the men's teams. The women's match between UNF and Troy is scheduled for 2 p.m., from the UNF Tennis Complex.
