TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tied 0-0 heading into the sixth inning, the University of North Florida baseball team scored 11 runs against Florida A&M to break the game open en route to a 19-1 victory on Tuesday night at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee, Fla.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored 19 runs on 18 hits, including four doubles and a home run.
Tyler Marincov belted his second home run of the season, while
Alex Bacon hit two doubles.
Chris Carter and
Garrick Ferguson each recorded their first hits as Ospreys, finishing the night with a double each. Twelve North Florida batters recorded hits in the game with four players notching multiple hits.
On the mound,
Kyle Finch earned his first collegiate start since 2010. The sophomore scattered three hits in 4.2 innings of work. He allowed no runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
Spencer Herrmann earned his first collegiate victory in his first outing of the season. The freshman tossed 0.2 innings of relief, coming into the game when the Ospreys erupted for 11 runs.
Trey Ferrano,
Jamie Cardwell and
Spencer Brown worked the final 3.2 innings, with Ferrano working 1.2 innings. The trio surrendered one hit combined in the effort.
The Rattlers threatened in the bottom of the second inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Daniel Lee doubled to left field. Lee tried to extend the double into a triple and was thrown out at third base. The umpires determined the out came before the lead runner touched home plate so the score remained 0-0.
Florida A&M threatened in the bottom of the third, but North Florida was able to keep the hosts off the scoreboard. A walk and a failed pick off gave the Rattlers a base runner in scoring position. FAMU used a ground out to advance the runner to within 90 feet of home, but a diving catch by Bacon ended the inning.
North Florida took control of the game in the sixth inning. The Ospreys scored 11 runs on seven hits and a Rattlers' error.
Joe Wielbruda led off the inning with a single to center field.
Andrew Karmeris followed with a single up the middle to give UNF runners on the corners. Marincov scored Wielbruda from third with an RBI single. A. Karmeris came around to score on a wild pitch. Marincov, who advanced to second on the wild pitch, stole third to move to within 90 feet of home. He came around to score on a
Ryan Roberson single through the left side. Ferguson came in to pinch run for Roberson and immediately stole second base.
Drew Weeks continued the inning with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. Weeks stole second base and came around to score on an RBI double by Bacon. Bacon stole third and came around to score on a wild pitch.
Joe Iorio and
Corey Bass each walked to continue the inning. The duo advanced on a passed ball. In his second plate appearance of the inning, Wielbruda walked to load the bases. A. Karmeris reached base on a fielding error by the Rattlers, allowing Iorio to score. The Ospreys scored the lead runner on a second passed ball of the inning. With runners on second and third, Marincov homered to left field to give North Florida an 11-0 lead.
The Rattlers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut into the Ospreys' lead, but would get no closer as UNF added a run in the eighth and seven runs in the ninth inning. In the ninth, the Ospreys scored seven runs on seven hits and a FAMU error. The ninth was highlighted by doubles by Bacon, Carter and Ferguson.
North Florida returns to action with a three-game home series with South Alabama beginning on Friday, March 9 at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The first pitch of the series is slated for 6:00 p.m.
