JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team started the first game of a scheduled three-game Atlantic Sun Conference on Friday night and conclude the game on Saturday afternoon with the USC Upstate Spartans claiming a 3-1 decision at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. It took slightly over 20 hours to play the two and a half hour game.

The second game of the series was postponed until Sunday. The two teams will square off in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Harmon Stadium.

On the mound, Kyle Westwood took the hard-luck loss for the Ospreys. The junior surrendered three runs – two earned runs – in 6.0 inning of work. Westwood scattered six hits, striking out five batters and allowing four runs.

Offensively, North Florida recorded six hits in the game. Six different players notched hits in the ball game with Joe Wielbruda leading the way with a double. Alex Bacon, Joe Iorio, Paul Karmeris, Tyler Marincov and Drew Weeks each had hits in the game. Weeks scored the only run of the game for the Ospreys on an RBI by Bacon.

In the first inning, USC Upstate was the first team to scratch the scoreboard. The Spartans opened the game with a base runner on a fielding error by the Ospreys. With one out, the runner advanced to second on a ground out. Upstate used a two-out RBI single to score the first run of the game and grab a 1-0 lead.

With two outs and a runner on first base in the top of the second inning, inclement weather in the Jacksonville area halted the game until Saturday afternoon – a 17 hour and 37 minute delay.

When play resumed, Westwood used a ground out to end the top of the second inning.

North Florida knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Weeks singled to left center and advanced on a throwing error by the Spartans. He advanced to within 90 feet of home on a ground out. Bacon tied the score with a RBI single to right field.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the fifth inning. The Spartans placed a runner in scoring position with a single and a sacrifice bunt. USC Upstate notched another single to place runners on the corners. A walk loaded the bases for the visitors and a wild pitch scored the first run of the inning. A second walk in the inning loaded the bases. Following a strikeout, the Spartans scored a on an RBI single to left field. USC Upstate's runner on second base attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at home plate by Weeks.

Westwood did not allow a run in the sixth inning and the Ospreys' bullpen prevented the Spartans from scoring in the final three innings of the game.
