JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returned home to Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium and recorded 14 hits en route to an 18-2 victory over Savannah State on Tuesday night. The Ospreys improved to 14-7 overall while the Tigers dropped to 8-13.
North Florida registered 14 hits on the night, including six extra base hits. The Ospreys recorded a two home runs, two triples and two doubles.
Paul Karmeris,
Tyler Marincov and
Joe Wielbruda each had two hits apiece on the night. P. Karmeris finished the night with a stand-up triple and a home run, while Marincov added his team-leading fifth home run of the year.
Evan Stermer tripled in the game, while
Drew Weeks and
Spencer Herrmann each had doubles. Marincov led the team with five runs batted in, while Wielbruda added a team-best three runs scored.
The Ospreys used five pitchers in the game.
Nick Allbritton picked up his first victory as an Osprey, working 4.0 innings in a controlled start. The junior college transfer scattered five hits, allowing just one run while striking out at pair.
Chandler Jagodzinski worked 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out three batters.
Bryan Mathews tossed the seventh inning allowing no runs and a walk.
Ryan Winker saw his first action in an UNF uniform, throwing the eighth inning. He allowed one run on no hits, walking three.
Trey Ferrano closed out the game for North Florida, working a scoreless ninth inning to secure the victory.
North Florida jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wielbruda led off the game with a single up the middle.
Andrew Karmeris followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Marincov wasted little time, jumping on the first pitch he saw and hitting it over the left center field fence to put the Ospreys in front 3-0.
Savannah State chipped into the Ospreys' lead in the top of the third inning. With one out, the Tigers used a single and a double to score a run and trim the UNF advantage to 3-1. North Florida escaped the inning with a line drive out and a strikeout.
The Ospreys extended their lead to 6-1 with three runs in the bottom of the third. Wielbruda singled and A. Karmeris followed with a walk to give UNF a pair of base runners. Marincov drove home Wielbruda with an RBI single to right center field. The base runners advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, P. Karmeris drove home his older brother with an RBI ground out. Weeks extended the inning as he was hit by a pitch.
Ryan Roberson singled to third base to score Marincov for the final run of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, UNF added another run. With one out, Wielbruda was hit by a pitch to start things off for the Ospreys. A. Karmeris reached base on a fielding error, giving North Florida runners on the corners. Marincov drove home Wielbruda with an RBI groundout.
North Florida broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on a pair of hits. The inning was highlighted by a stand-up triple by P. Karmeris and an RBI double by Weeks. The Ospreys benefited from three walks, two hit by pitches and an error by SSU. In the bottom of the sixth inning, UNF scored an additional six runs on four hits. In the inning, Stermer pinch hit, legging out a triple to right field. P. Karmeris hit his second home run of the season, a two-run homer.
The Tigers scored a run in the top of the eighth inning. Back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. SSU used a third walk of the inning to score a run, but trailed 18-2, a lead that UNF would not relinquish.
