MIAMI, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to FIU on Tuesday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Fla. The Ospreys fell to 11-5 overall, while the Panthers improved to 8-6.
Offensively, North Florida continued to hit well, recording 11 hits on the night. The double-digit hit performance by they Ospreys marked the 13th time in 16 games UNF has belted 10 or more hits.
Tyler Marincov and
Michael Wesner paced the North Florida offense, combining for five hits. Marincov was a triple away from the cycle as the reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the week hit a single, double and a home run. He scored two of the four runs on the night, driving in three runs. Wesner added two hits on the night.
Ryan Roberson added an RBI on the night, while
Andrew Karmeris and
Joe Wielbruda each scored a run.
Kyle Finch earned the start for the Ospreys, taking the loss. The sophomore surrendered five runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Finch struck out the first batter he faced, but was hindered by five walks.
Chandler Jagodzinski was the first relief pitcher of the night. The senior worked a season-best 3.0 innings, surrendering just a pair of base hits. Jagodzinski did not allow a run or a walk and struck out three batters in his outing.
Spencer Herrmann and
Tyler Moore combined for the next 2.2 innings. Herrmann worked 1.1 innings with no runs on just one hit. Moore also tossed 1.1 innings, allowing one run on a pair of base hits. Moore tied Jagodzinski with a team-high three strikeouts on the night.
North Florida wasted little time scratching the scoreboard. In the first inning,
Corey Bass singled to start the game. Wielbruda reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second as A. Karmeris singled through the left side. Marincov continued his hot play in March with his team-leading fourth home run of the season to give the Ospreys an early 3-0 lead.
FIU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs, back-to-back walks allowed the first base runners of the game for the Panthers. The hosts loaded the bases with a single through the left side of the infield. FIU scored a pair of runs on a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield to cut the Ospreys' lead to 3-2.
The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. The leadoff batter doubled to left center field to start things off. After a pair of outs left FIU with a runner on third, a passed ball allowed the tying run to score. Back-to-Back walks continued the inning and forced a pitching change by North Florida. The two base runners came around to score as FIU cleared the bases with a double to left center field to take a 5-3 lead. Jagodzinski fanned the final batter of the inning to limit the deficit to just two runs.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Alex Bacon singled through the left side of the infield, breaking a string of 11 consecutive Ospreys retired by FIU.
T.J. Gavlik followed with a single through the right side, but on the play Bacon was hit by the ball for the second out of the inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Bass, who led off the game with a single, walked to put the tying run on first. The rally fell short as a fielder's choice ended the inning and the Ospreys' threat.
North Florida trimmed the deficit in the top of the sixth inning with an unearned run. With one out, Marincov double to right field off of the wall.
Michael Wesner followed with a single into right center field. He was able to advance to second base as the throw from the outfield missed the cutoff man. With runners on second and third, North Florida used an RBI ground out by Roberson to trim the Panthers' lead to just 5-4.
FIU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Aramis Garcia hit a solo home run to increase the margin to 6-4. The Ospreys were unable to mount a rally in the final inning, dropping its first game in the last five attempts.
North Florida and FIU conclude the midweek series with a game slated for 3:00 p.m. at the FIU Baseball Stadium. Note: The game was originally scheduled for 6:00 p.m. but was moved to 3:00 p.m. to accommodate the Ospreys travel plans.
