JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis won the final singles match in order to take a 4-3 victory over Charleston Southern on Tuesday in the Ospreys' home opener at UNF Tennis Complex.
“Charleston Southern is a solid team from top to bottom and there was no easy out on any court,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “I'm happy that every UNF player stepped up and took care of their court.”
UNF held a 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches to begin the day.
Aline Berkenbrock and
Lorena Aviles posted an 8-3 win over Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic at No. 1 doubles.
Simona Weymar and
Rebeca Pereira swept Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters 8-0 at No. 2. Meanwhile, Charleston Southern's Susita Das and Alia Nour pulled out an 8-7 (3) victory over
Marina Cunningham and
Danielle Day at No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, the top three matches finished first. Lorena Avile's 7-5, 6-1 win over Angelica Sidorenko at No. 2 singles allowed the Ospreys to go up 2-0. Hubler's 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles against
Danielle Day let the Buccaneers make it a 2-1 match, but Berkenbrock posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Makhova at No. 1 as UNF held a 3-1 lead.
Charleston Southern finished with wins in the next two matches. Walters defeated Weymar 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 and then Dzakovic defeated Pereira 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 4 to even the match at 3-3.
Cunningham pulled out a 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory over Nour at No. 6 singles to give the Ospreys the edge over Charleston Southern.
UNF heads south this weekend for two road matches. The Ospreys begin their trip at No. 10 Miami on Saturday at 11 a.m.
