Offense Sputters as Baseball Falls to SIU

Boxscore

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.  Despite matching SIU with eight hits, the Ospreys offense was unable to generate timely hits, leaving nine runners stranded on base.

UNF was led by senior Michael Wesner.  The lefthander finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.  Wesner belted the first home run of the season for the Ospreys, a two-run shot to right field in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Alex Bacon, Andrew Karmeris, Paul Karmeris, Bryan Mathews, Drew Weeks and Joe Wielbruda each contributed hits on the game.  Weeks had the only other extra-base hit, recording a double on the afternoon.

On the mound, junior transfer Michael Renner took the hard-luck loss for North Florida.  The lefty hurled 6.1 innings, scattering six hits and being charged with four runs.  He was relieved for the final 2.2 innings by transfer Nick Allbritton.  Allbritton struck out four batters in his UNF debut, surrendering just a pair of base hits.

SIU was the first team to plate a runner, scoring a run in the top of the second inning.  The Salukis led off the inning with a double down the left field line.  A single moved the runner to third base and a sacrifice fly gave the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.

The Salukies added a run in the top of the fifth inning.  With two outs, SIU used a double to place a runner in scoring position.  The Salukis benefited from an RBI double through the right side of the infield to increase their lead to 2-0.

North Florida responded in the sixth inning.  Tyler Marincov was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Wesner followed by lifting a 0-1 pitch over the right field wall to knot the score at 2-2.  The home run was the first for the Ospreys this season and the third of Wesner's UNF career.

The game did not stay tied long as SIU regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning.  A solo home run by Austin Montgomery gave the Salukis the lead.  The inning continued with a double to left center field.  The runner advanced to third base on a ground out.  SIU plated the runner with single through the right side of the infield, giving the visitors a 4-2 lead.

The Ospreys were not able to mount a comeback as they stranded a runner in the ninth inning.

North Florida and Southern conclude the three-game series with the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Harmon Stadium.  Left handed pitcher Tommy Organ gets the call for the Ospreys, while lefty Nathan Dorris toes the rubber for the Salukis.
