GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 12 ranked University of North Florida golf team continues its spring season schedule at the SunTrust Gator Invitational hosted by the University of Florida.
The event will feature 54 holes of strokes play, 36 on Saturday and a final 18 on Sunday, at the 6,701, par-70 layout. Play will begin each day at approximately 8 a.m.
The 2012 edition of the SunTrust Gator Invitational features a strong field with nine of the 14 teams either ranked or receiving votes in the latest Golfworld/Nike Golf Division I coaches poll. Leading the way is a trio of teams ranked among the nation's best in Arkansas (3), Auburn (4) and North Florida (12). The two additional ranked teams are Florida State (20) and UCF (22), while Florida, Kennesaw State, Liberty, and UAB are receiving votes in the poll.
North Florida opened the spring season Jan. 30-31 at the Sea Best Seafood Invitational earning a third-place finish. Senior Kevin Aylwin led the way for the Ospreys with a fourth-place showing and was joined in the Top 20 by teammates Kevin Phelan (11th) and Pete Kellerman (15th). Freshman Joey Petronio finished 8th while playing as an individual.
The Ospreys will be represented by Aylwin, Phelan, Kellerman, Petronio and junior Sean Dale, a recently announced candidate for the Ben Hogan Award.
“We are looking forward to getting back on the course,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “The Gator Invitational is always a fun event for our guys. It's a great opportunity to play against a group of other nationally-ranked teams. The guys have worked hard the last couple weeks and we hope to turn that into a strong showing this weekend.”
Following the Gator Invitational, North Florida hosts the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 26-28 at Sawgrass Country Club.
