TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The North Florida volleyball team concluded a full weekend of competition with a hard fought 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21) victory over in-state foe Florida A&M on Sunday night.
The Ospreys (7-8) posted a 2-1 mark in a stretch of three matches in three days and with the win have matched their season win total from last season. The busy weekend also capped a seven-match road swing for UNF.
Junior libero Nicole Baran finished with a career-best 30 digs in helping the Ospreys to a 70-53 advantage in digs for the match. Freshman setter Casey Giovanazzi handed out a season-best 63 assists while setting UNF to a season best .242 hitting percentage.
A quartet of UNF hitters collected double-digit kills led by 16 from Paige Pridgeon. Anna Budinska posted a double-double tallying 15 kills and 17 digs while Carolyn Jenkins and Marija Pantovic had 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Florida A&M (0-10) was led by 14 kills from Maria Ceccarelli.
“We played a good match and getting this win was a great way to finish a long road swing,” said UNF head coach Kevin Campbell. “Nicole (Baran) was outstanding. We were balanced offensively and got some consistency from our hitters. I like how we're growing as a team and definitely continuing to play better all around.”
UNF jumped to an early 7-1 lead in set one before A&M rallied with a 7-1 run of their own later in the frame to earn their first lead. The Ospreys quickly answered using a six-point surge to take a 22-14 advantage and then closed out the set for the 25-19 win.
After North Florida scored the opening three points in set two, the two squads settled into a back-and-forth battled for much of the rest of the stanza. A five-point spurt put the Ospreys up 20-15, but the Rattlers slithered back edging in front 23-21. UNF halted the FAMU rally scoring the final four points to grab a 2-0 lead in the match.
FAMU made the quick start in set three grabbing a 7-1 lead. UNF began chipping away at the deficit and eventually gained a slight lead at 16-15. A span of multiple sideouts followed before A&M moved to set point at 24-21. The Ospreys scored back-to-back points in a final push before FAMU extended the match with a 25-23 decision.
The Ospreys virtually controlled the momentum in the fourth set holding as much as an eight-point (22-14) lead. The Rattlers did not go away without a fight trimming the deficit to three, 24-21, before UNF notched the final point.
North Florida next returns to the court for its Atlantic Sun Conference home opener Friday against Kennesaw State at 7 p.m.
