JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida cross country teams will kick off their 2011 season Friday afternoon as they each split their squads and travel to the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C. and the JU Short Course Duals in Jacksonville, Fla.
The majority of the teams' top runners will be competing at the Covered Bridge Open, hosted by Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. The race will be run at the ASU State Farm Fields Friday evening. UNF will face fellow Atlantic Sun member East Tennessee State, as well as upper-level competition such as Florida State, Wake Forest and East Carolina, among other teams.
“We're up here to get a gauge of where everyone is heading into the season,” Head Coach Mark VanAlstyne said. “most importantly, however, we're looking to stay healthy and get some experience and training.”
The women's 5,000-meter race will begin at 5 p.m., while the men's 8,000-meter competition will start at 5:45.
The remainder of the team's runners will compete individually at the JU Short Course Duals, hosted by Jacksonville University at the JU Golf Course. The women's 3,720-meter race will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, while the men will begin their 4,850-meter race at 6:25. Two of the Ospreys' conference opponents, Stetson and JU, will have runners in attendance, while Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State will also be competing.
