Baseball Ends Season at New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of North Florida baseball team dropped its final game of the 2011 season, 3-2, to the University of New Orleans on Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field. The game was the final of the season and the final game for the Ospreys (27-27) seven seniors – Robbie Collier, Kyle Dahl, Andrew Hannon, George Lott, Casey Medlen, Sam Perry and Michael Smith

Offensively, the Ospreys recorded six hits on the afternoon, including a pair of extra base hits. Smith led all batters with a pair of hits and an RBI on the afternoon. Hannon finished the day with a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Evan Stermer added a triple, coming around to score a run for UNF. Kyle Dahl and Alex Bacon each had hits for North Florida in the game.

On the mound, Tommy Organ earned the start for the Ospreys. The sophomore worked 5.0 innings, scattering five hits. Organ surrendered two runs in the first inning and did not allow a run over the next four innings he pitched. He was charged with three runs, walking two batters and striking out four on the day.

Medlen entered the game in relief of Organ in the bottom of the sixth inning. In his final outing in an Ospreys' uniform, the senior hurler worked the final 3.0 innings allowing no runs on just a pair of hits. Medlen did not issue a walk and struck out a team-best five batters on the afternoon.

New Orleans' Tyler Sanders earned the win in his final game as a Privateer. The senior held the Ospreys to just two runs on six hits, tossing 8.0 innings. He walked four batters and struck out nine.

UNO took an early lead, scoring a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. UNO's Zach Pohto and Nolan Church hit back-to-back solo home runs to take the early 2-0 lead in the game.

North Florida answered with runs in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Stermer tripled to right center field to give the Ospreys a runner in scoring position. With two outs, UNF got some help from the Privateers, as a fielding error continued the inning allowed the run to score.

The Privateers increased their lead back to two with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. UNO lead off the inning with a double to left center field. A ground out allowed the runner to move to third base. A single that dropped just inside the left field foul line allowed the runner to come around to score. Medlen retired the next two batters on strikes to stop the New Orleans threat.

The Ospreys got the run back in the top of the seventh inning. Hannon led off the inning with a double to left field. With two outs, Smith delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Hannon from second base and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Neither team was able to generate any offense in the final two innings of play as the pitching staffs for each school were masterful on the mound.
