JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- University of North Florida volleyball finished out the regular season with a 3-1 win (25-15, 15-25, 25-19, 25-18) over Stetson on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.
Carolyn Jenkins led the Ospreys (14-16, 5-8 Atlantic Sun) with 12 kills, while
Nicole Baran had 20 digs.
Casey Giovanazzi recorded 33 assists.
Kaylee Ream led the Hatters (9-18, 2-11 Atlantic Sun) with nine kills. Monique Russell tallied 18 digs and Kelli Carneal had 22 assists.
Several runs allowed UNF to dominate the first set. The Ospreys began the set with a 4-0 run that included two service aces from
Dagnija Medina. A pair of three-point runs midway through the set helped the Ospreys pull away from Stetson. UNF took a 10-point lead on a Jenkins kill, making it an 18-8 set. Stetson had a couple of late runs that allowed the Hatter to close the gap to six points, but UNF got five of the set's last six points to take the win, 25-15.
UNF and Stetson each had a significant run early in the second set. A kill by Jenkins sparked a six-point run for the Ospreys, while the Hatters responded with a five-point run of their own. However, the Hatters got another run late into the set, scoring seven unanswered points to propel them to a 25-15 victory and even the match at 1-1.
UNF and Stetson battled it out early in the third set with neither team being able to build much of an advantage. With UNF up 14-12, a five-point run allowed the Ospreys to build a slight advantage. The two teams continued to battle late in the set, but a kill from
Cameron McGuire allowed UNF to close out the set, 25-19, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Ospreys took several seven-point leads early in the fourth set, but saw the Hatters cut their lead down to three. Up 10-7, a kill from
Paige Pridgeon was the first of four-straight UNF points that allowed the Ospreys to regain a seven-point advantage. Stetson trimmed UNF's lead down to three once again. But a timely McGuire kill sparked a four-point run that put the Ospreys up 22-14. The teams battled in the set's final points, with Pridgeon getting the match's final kill.
The Ospreys will now have to wait to find out if they earned a berth to the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Coming into today's match, UNF was seventh in the A-Sun Standings. The Ospreys needed to win today's match against Stetson and for Jacksonville to lose to Florida Gulf Coast – a match that is being played at 5 p.m. on Saturday – to secure the sixth seed for the tournament.
