Postmatch Interview (w/Casey Giovanazzi)
JACKSONVILLE -- The North Florida volleyball team completed their weekend twinbill with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-14, 26-24) victory over in-state foe Florida A&M Saturday night at UNF Arena.
The win was the Ospreys third straight and upped the team's record for the season to 11-14. FAMU has a five-match win streak snapped falling to 5-12 on the year.
Carolyn Jenkins led the way for UNF finishing with a career-high 19 kills to go along with four blocks. The junior committed just three hitting miscues on her way to a personal best .552 hitting percentage.
Fellow junior
Paige Pridgeon posted her second consecutive double-double after tallying 18 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore
Anna Budinska chipped in 13 kills and a career-best 24 digs.
“We got a balanced performance both offensively and defensively tonight,” said UNF head coach Kevin Campbell. “We continue to play with an increasing confidence. I felt like this team is consistently playing at higher level. We are maturing and excelling at the right time of year. Tonight, several different players figured out that their positive energy can affect the team in a winning effort.”
UNF sluggishly opened the first set, as the team looked to quickly return to action following Friday night's emotionally-charged five-set victory over crosstown rival Jacksonville.
The Rattlers used a 5-0 spurt to grab an early first set lead and maintained a slight edge throughout the frame. FAMU extended its lead to four points midway through the set and then fought off a late UNF surge to secure the 25-21 win.
The Ospreys bounced back in set two racing out to a 13-4 lead. Keeping the pressure on, UNF pushed its advantage to double digits (18-8) before seeing the Rattlers slither back into contention behind a 9-2 run. North Florida eventually halted the surge and evened the match with a 25-20 victory capped by a kill from Jenkins.
Another quick start for UNF (10-2) sparked a dominating performance in set three. The Ospreys hit a match-best .268 recording 16 kills including eight by Pridgeon. FAMU got no closer than four points as UNF cruised to the comfortable 25-14 decision.
Set four proved to be a true back-and-forth competition needing extra points and featuring 11 ties. FAMU held a late 23-20 advantage, but kills by Jenkins and Budinska along with a tandem block for Jenkins and
Julie Trembley allowed the Ospreys to reach match-point. The Rattlers were even the count at 24 before Jenkins smashed another kill and FAMU's tying attempt clipped the net allowing UNF to earn the win.
North Florida concludes its current home stand Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference rematch against Bethune Cookman in UNF Arena.
