Ospreys Fall Short to Radford

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of North Florida volleyball team forced Radford to extended play in two sets, but the Highlanders held off the Ospreys 3-0 (24-26, 15-25, 24-26) on Saturday evening during the final day of action at the Holiday Inn Charleston Riverview Invitational hosted by the College of Charleston and Carolina First Arena.

Leading UNF (2-11) was senior Marshay Greenlee with nine kills, while sophomore Paige Pridgeon added eight kills and freshman Britt Claessens notched 24 assists. On the defensive side, Greenlee and Claessens also tallied three blocks each. Senior Chelsea Rabe and sophomore Nicole Baran both had nine digs.

Sophomore Dagnija Medina was named to the All-Tournament team for the Ospreys. She posted 16 kills, six blocks, four digs and two aces over the weekend.

For the Highlanders (7-7) Megan McWhorter had 13 kills and 10 digs. Kiley Kent posted 23 assists and Katelyn Meeks recorded 25 digs.

UNF took an early lead in the first set and was up 13-10. Radford came back to tie it at 15. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies as the first set had nine ties and three lead changes. UNF and RU were tied at 24, but the Highlanders were able to secure the final points to take the set.

Radford came out strong in the second set and took its largest lead at 20-9. UNF looked to make a run late, cutting the gap to seven, 20-13, but Radford closed out the set with a 5-2 run.

In the third set the Ospreys came out firing, taking an early 14-8 lead. The Highlanders responded to close the gap to two at 16-14. UNF again extended its lead at 21-16, but Radford went on a run to tie the set at 22. The two teams were tied at 24, but a kill followed by a RU ace claimed the set and match win for the Highlanders.

UNF will be back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 25 when the team hosts Florida A&M at 5 p.m. at UNF Arena.
