Ospreys Drop Match to Bears, 3-1

MACON, Ga. – The University of North Florida volleyball team fell to Mercer, 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 16-25) on Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the University Center in Macon, Ga.

Leading the Ospreys (4-14, 1-2 A-Sun) was sophomore Paige Pridgeon, recording match-highs with 17 kills and 19 digs. Freshman Anna Budinska added six kills. Freshman Britt Claessens posted 26 assists. Senior Jessica Catelano sophomore Nicole Baran had 18 digs each. The Ospreys set a UNF record in team digs with 93.

For the Bears (7-14, 1-2 A-Sun), Amiee Frutchey had 12 kills. Jamie Duffy and Krista Hurley added eight kills each. Carly Iannarino and Bridget Sheerin notched 25 and 15 assists, respectively. Charlotte Harris had a match-high 31 digs.

In the opening set, the Ospreys got off to a slow start, falling back 4-0, but UNF quickly heated up with a 5-0 run. The Ospreys continued their run, taking a 10-16 lead before the Bears responded to tie the set at 11. UNF again answered with a run, scoring the next seven straight behind the serving of Catelano to take an 18-11 lead. The Bears got no closer than five (24-19) as UNF took set one and a 1-0 lead in the match.

The two teams kept the second set close the entire frame with 14 ties and eight lead changes. UNF and Mercer were tied as late as 22, but the Bears were able to close out the set with a 3-0 run, claiming the second and tying the match at 1-1.

UNF and Mercer went back and forth to open third set, with the Bears holding a two point lead at 11-9. Mercer went on a run after that to extend its lead to nine at 21-12. The Ospreys looked to close the gap, but the Bears held on take the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the two teams again were close early, with the Bears holding a 14-13 lead at the midway point. Mercer responded with a run to extend its lead to 21-13. The Ospreys were unable to make a late run as the Bears took the set and the match.

UNF will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Kennesaw. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center.
