JU Outlasts UNF, 3-2

BOX SCORE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In a back and forth volleyball battle between crosstown rivals, the University of North Florida came up just short of defeating Jacksonville as the Dolphins claimed a 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 19-25, 8-15) non-conference win in the first of two matches in the SunTrust River City Rumble “Battle of the Barrel.”

Even though both teams are members of the Atlantic Sun Conference, the match did not count toward conference standings. The league made a change this season that allows the teams to only play each conference opponent once toward the standings. The match later this season (Nov. 12) at UNF will count in A-Sun play.

Leading the Ospreys (5-17, 2-4 A-Sun) was sophomore Paige Pridgeon with 17 kills while notching 12 digs. Senior Jessica Catelano added 14 kills. Freshman Britt Claessens tallied 47 assists. On the defensive side sophomore Nicole Baran along with Catelano had 13 digs each.

“That was a great match despite the outcome,” said head coach Kevin Campbell. “We played and executed a really high level of volleyball. We learned from our mistakes in game time and made changes in game time. Our setter was good and our libero was excellent. All of our hitters executed well. Our passing fluctuated which had an effect. Overall we played a high level of volleyball. I think momentum got away from us in the fifth set and we didn't close out.”

For the Dolphins (12-11, 3-3 A-Sun) Brittany Lehman led with 16 kills. Aidan Yeager added 12 while Alyssa Robertson and Alliya Drzewiecki added 10 kills each. Kendall Courtney posted 46 assists. Defensively, Ashley August tallied a match-high 20 digs.

The Ospreys came out strong in the opening set, taking an early 8-4 lead. JU came back to tie the set at 15. The two teams were tied again at 17 before the Ospreys went on a run, taking a 21-17 lead.  The Dolphins looked to make a late run, but the Ospreys closed out the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, JU jumped out early, going up 8-2, but the Ospreys came back to tie the set at 10. The Dolphins responded with a run, going up 15-11. UNF closed the gap to three, but would get no closer as JU claimed the second set to tie the match 1-1.

UNF took control of the third set early, taking a 13-6. JU closed the gap, but would get no closer than five (20-15). North Florida rolled to the win and a 2-1 match lead.

The two teams traded points in the fourth set with six ties and were knotted at 11 before the Dolphins went on a 6-0 run, to go up 17-11. UNF looked to make a late run, closing the gap to five (18-13) but would get no closer as the Dolphins tied the match at two sets each.

In the final set, the two teams kept it close, but the Dolphins held a 9-6 lead. The Ospreys would get no closer than three as JU claimed the set and the match.

The Ospreys will be back on the court at home on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. when they host Seattle at UNF Arena.
