UNF Drops Bethune-Cookman, 3-0

The Ospreys go 2-2 on the weekend at the UCF Classic.

, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team downed Bethune-Cookman, 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-21) to pick up the win on Saturday, Aug. 29 in its final match of the 2009 UCF Classic, hosted by Central Florida in The Venue. The Ospreys went 2-2 on the weekend. 

"Overall this weekend we took great steps in our team development and we had the opportunity to see just about everyone on our team play," said UNF head volleyball coach Kevin Campbell. "I felt like the team offense as a whole stepped forward, and on the defensive side our staff was very impressed with the play of Nicole Baran, our freshman libero."

 

North Florida will return to the court on Sept. 4-5 at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, N.C. at the Holmes Convocation Center on the ASU campus.

 

Leading the Ospreys was junior Danielle Lerch with 12 kills. Julie Fye recorded a double-double on the match with 11 digs and 27 assists.

 

For the Wildcats, Chelle Ticeson had nine kills. Krysta Gardner had nine digs while Daryl Rodriguez posted 24 assists.

 

BCC kept the score close early in the set, but the Ospreys quickly pulled ahead with an 8-2 run to take a 11-5 advantage in the match. UNF would control the rest of the set, going on several service runs including five straight from Fye to close out the set, 25-11 and take the 1-0 lead in the match.

 

In the second set UNF pulled ahead early, taking an 11-6 lead, but the Wildcats closed the gap to two at the 12-10 mark before the Ospreys went a 10-4 run to take a 22-14 advantage. BCC went on a little run to close the gap to four (22-18), but UNF got the possession back and closed out the set with three unanswered points to win 25-18 and go up 2-0 in the match.

 

The third set was a battle back and forth between the two team s with three ties and two lead changes. The last tie of the set came at 19, but a kill from Read and a service ace by Lerch gave the Ospreys the momentum to pull ahead for good as UNF closed out the set with a 6-2 run to secure the match.
