ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team fell to host team Central Florida (13-25, 20-25, 17-25) on Friday, Aug. 28 in the fourth and final game on the opening day of the UCF Classic in The Venue on the UCF campus.
North Florida will return to The Venue on Saturday, Aug. 29 for a 9:00 a.m. match against DePaul. The Ospreys are also slated for a 3:30 match with Bethune-Cookman.
Leading the Ospreys was junior Kaley Read. Freshman Paige Pridgeon tallied 11 digs while transfer junior Jessica Catelano had 28 assists.
For the Knights, Erin Campbell posted 17 kills. Kristin Fisher had 13 digs while Andee Youngblood recorded 35 assists.
UCF (2-0) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the opening set. UNF (1-1) looked to battle back, but the deficit was too much as the Knights took set one 25-13.
The second set proved to be a closer game, and the Ospreys were within three at 18-15, but UCF went on 4-1 run to take the 22-16 lead. The Knights scored a pair more, but with game point showing a kill from Danielle Lerch put the ball back in the Ospreys hands, down 19-24. UNF scored one more off an ace by Nallellis Sanfeliz, but a kill by the Knights' Nichole Riedel gave UCF the needed point to secure the 2-0 match lead.
UNF came out strong in the third frame, going up 7-3 before UCF responded with a four unanswered points to knot the set at seven all. The Ospreys kept the score close over the next few possessions, but the Knights would not back down and took a 16-12 lead behind the serving of Riedel. UNF closed the gap to two at 18-16, but that is as close as the Ospreys would come as Central Florida went on another run to close out the set at 25-17.
