BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior middle blocker Kaley Read tallied 20 kills to lead the University of North Florida volleyball team past non-conference opponent Bethune-Cookman, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-17), on Tuesday night at UNF Arena.
Read hit 38.1 percent, knocking down 20 kills on 42 attempts for the Ospreys (10-13). Freshman outside hitter Paige Pridgeon tallied eight kills. Junior outside hitter Nallelis Sanfeliz, along with freshman libero Nicole Baran, led on the defensive side with 15 and 10 digs, respectively. Sophomore setter Julie Fye had 21 assists.
“We were able to go out and play hard tonight and get things done,” said UNF head coach Kevin Campbell. “Now we have to get in the gym and get ready for our next conference match against USC Upstate.”
For the Wildcats (7-11), Kaiyana Johnson had eight kills. Jacqueline Woodyear posted nine digs for the defense.
UNF took control of the first set from the beginning, jumping out to a 10-1 lead behind the serving of Baran and Sanfeliz. The Wildcats were never able to overcome the deficit as the Ospreys rolled to a 25-11 victory and 1-0 advantage in the match.
In the second set the Ospreys and Wildcats went back and forth in the opening rallies, with BCC holding a one point lead (7-6). But UNF responded as Baran again went on a run, serving seven straight, giving the Ospreys a 13-8 lead. The Wildcats would score a pair more, but the Ospreys went on another run as Pridgeon served the next seven, putting UNF on top 22-10. UNF won the second set 25-12.
UNF and BCC opened the third set trading points until the Ospreys opened up the scoring to take a 9-5 lead as Read notched back-to-back aces. The Wildcats pulled within two (9-7), but UNF again responded to take a 14-7 lead. BCC closed the gap to four (14-10), but that is as close as they would come as the Ospreys took the final set 25-17.
North Florida will return to the court on Friday, Oct. 23, when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C. to face USC Upstate. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Hodge Arena.
