JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's and women's cross country teams ran on the new Florida State home course at Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday morning with the Ospreys' men posting 72 points and a third place finish out of six teams. UNF's women tallied 92 points, finishing fifth out of seven teams in the FSU Invitational.
The men, in the 8k, finished right behind Florida and in front of Florida State's "B" team. The men's race opened up with 38 runners from five other universities. UNF's sophomore Johnathan Esteban finished on top for the Ospreys in ninth place (25.57.16), but scored seven points for the team. UNF did a great job staying together near the finish with junior William Pearce finishing 14th (26:33.93), senior Sammy Palmer in 15th (26:46.21), and sophomore Josh Brown in 17th (26:57.37), all crossing within 24 seconds of each other.
The women finished right behind Florida and ahead of both Augusta State and Florida A&M in the 5k run. Freshman Shelby Kittrell finished again on top for the Ospreys with a ninth place finish in 18:22.91. Sophomore Erin Heasley (18:42.82), freshman Meggie Emons (18:58.29) and freshman Melanie Novak (19:05.05) finished 15th, 20th and 21st, respectively.
UNF will now focus on the Sodexho Stetson Hatter Invite on Friday, Oct. 16, in DeLand, Fla.
