UNF downs former conference champ

Kaley Read puts up match-high 13 kills

Box Score

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The road ahead for the University of North Florida women's volleyball team looks even better after its 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19) victory over 2007 Summit League regular season champion South Dakota State on Saturday at the Seminole Tri-Tournament.

It was the second time this season UNF (2-3) was able to bounce back after dropping the first set. Sophomore Kaley Read notched her third- straight double-figure kill match, recording a match- high 14 to go along with eight digs, three blocks and four aces. Sophomore Madie Belvin was smooth at the head of the Lady Osprey offense, putting up 28 assists while also recording eight digs.

"I thought Madie set a good match," head coach Kevin Campbell said. "Once we got a couple of good kills under our belts, it helped us establish our confidence. We've been trying to put a consistent match together, and we did exactly that today."

After just finishing short in the first set, the Lady Ospreys snatched control of the match in the second frame. Five errors by the Jackrabbits helped UNF rip off a 10-2 run and set the tone. The Lady Ospreys held a healthy lead through most of the set, but SDSU came all the way back to later tie it at 20.

After a couple of back-and-forth exchanges on the score to make it 22 apiece, UNF put its foot down and finished it by going on a 3-0 run that was helped by a kill from junior Agata Dawidowicz and an ace from Belvin to end it.

UNF got out to another fast start in the third set, taking an 8-2 lead on an unassisted kill by senior Bary Rasmussen. The Jackrabbits hopped back and eventually took a 14-13 lead, but the Lady Ospreys - defined by their determination - wouldn't let it bother them.

Read dropped a kill on SDSU that began a 6-0 run to give UNF a 19-14 advantage. The Lady Ospreys went up by as many as seven before the Jacks made it interesting and pulled to within two at 23-21. But SDSU's aggressive worked against it, and a service error by Melia Iwamoto and an attack error by Kelli Fiegen helped UNF take a 2-1 match lead.

Both teams traded shots in the final set before UNF began to pull away with a 7-1 run to make the score 15-9 in its favor. With the satisfying win in sight, there was no way the Lady Ospreys were going to let it slip away. SDSU wasn't able to get any closer than three the rest of the way as UNF cruised to the victory.

Dawidowicz led the Lady Ospreys with a match- high five aces, while sophomore Marshay Greenlee tied the team-high of three blocks. UNF's win evened the series with the Jackrabbits at one apiece, and it was also UNF's first-ever win in Tallahassee.

UNF will try to continue its success against cross- town rival Jacksonville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at UNF Arena for its home-opener. Live video and stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
