75th-ranked Ospreys drop second straight A-Sun match

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's tennis team capped a disappointing two-match swing on Sunday with a 4-3 loss to Atlantic Sun Conference newcomer Florida Gulf Coast.

UNF (7-5, 3-2 A-Sun) moved back into the national rankings this week at the No. 75 spot but is certain to fall back out of the poll after an 0-2 weekend that featured Sunday's to the Eagles and a Thursday defeat at A-Sun foe Stetson.

Sunday's match was delayed a day by inclement weather in the Fort Myers area.

Florida Gulf Coast (4-5, 1-2) applied early pressure by taking two of three doubles matches to grab the doubles point and an early advantage. Once in singles, UNF battled back with wins at the top three positions, but losses at the bottom three spots proved fatal.

Even UNF's victories didn't come easily. UNF's Eduardo Pereira rallied to defeat Florida Gulf Coast's Brenton Bacon 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Yuiti Lopes went three sets before knocking off FGCU's Mikkel Muller 7-6 (7), 6-7 (8), 10-8 at the No. 3 spot. Javier Ferrin posted the easiest win of the day for the Ospreys, 6-0 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

The Ospreys return to action on Friday when they travel to Wichita, Kan., to participate in the Wichita State Invitational. They will face Oral Roberts on Friday at noon ET.
