UNF falls 74-71 to FGCU in season finale for both teams
BOX SCORE
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's basketball team appeared to have its 48-game road losing streak all but snapped on Saturday night in its season finale at Florida Gulf Coast.
Once again, fate proved cruel for the Ospreys.
UNF allowed a late lead to disappear, then misfired on two last-second shots in regulation that would have won the game, before faltering in overtime as FGCU prevailed 74-71 at Alico Arena. The Ospreys had a last-second shot to tie in overtime as well, but Cortez Riley couldn't sink a third consecutive 3-pointer in the extra period to extend the game further.
Tom Hammonds scored 18 points to lead UNF (3-26, 1-15 A-Sun), which rallied from a seven-point deficit with four minutes remaining by putting together an 11- 1 run to take a 59-56 lead with 1:17 to play. Three free throws by FGCU's Casey Wohlleb tied the game after that, the last with 16 seconds remaing. After a timeout to set up a final play, Hammonds' jumper misfired from 17 feet, and a DeVon Jones putback attempt missed as well -- sending the game into overtime.
Wohlleb scored 29 points for FGCU (10-20, 6-10 A- Sun), including six in overtime, to help the Eagles ice it down the stretch. Riley hit a pair of late 3-pointers to make it interesting in the final minute, but his last- second shot failed to connect. Riley had eight of UNF's 12 points in overtime and finished with 10 points in the game.
UNF shot 38 percent from the floor and hit 7-of-22 from 3-point range, but only 1-of-10 3-pointers fell in the first half as the Ospreys dug themselves into a 31- 24 hole at halftime. FGCU shot 38 percent and hit 25- of-34 from the free throw line. The Eagles also held a 43-40 rebounding edge.
FGCU built its biggest lead at 34-24 early in the second half, but the Ospreys rallied and kept things close after that before making their late run.
UNF and FGCU are both going transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I and are ineligible for postseason play during the reclassification process. The Ospreys will be eligible for the postseason in 2009-10, while the Eagles will be eligible in 2011-12. UNF is now 0-6 in overtime since moving to Division I, with four of those losses coming this season.
