UNF sweeps singles matches in straight sets

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's tennis team captured its first win of the season by taking out Bethune- Cookman 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.

The Ospreys (1-1) swept through singles play and won two of three doubles matches to collect the doubles point as well in winning their home opener.

UNF battled through a slow start in doubles, getting a hard-fought 9-7 win by Eduardo Pereira and Kurt Gattiker at the No. 2 position to claim the decisive doubles match and an early 1-0 advantage. Javier Ferrin and Adrian Escarte won 8-2 for the Ospreys at No. 3 doubles. BCC's Stefan James and Emil Vassilev took the win at No. 1, knocking off UNF's Alejandro Argumedo and Yuiti Lopes, 8-6.

In singles, the Ospreys won all six matches in straight sets -- including a 6-1, 6-0 decision by Pereira at the No. 1 spot. UNF's Graham Edgar took down Yannick Jackson (7-6, 6-1) at the No. 3 position in the most closely contested match of the afternoon.

The Ospreys will make a two-match swing through Alabama this weekend, facing 27th-ranked South Alabama on Friday in Mobile at 2:30 p.m. ET and at Troy on Saturday at noon ET.
