Ospreys try to build momentum
Fresh off a tie for third place at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, the University of North Florida golf team will head to Orlando, Fla., Monday and Tuesday for the Rio Pinar Invitational, hosted by UCF, looking to build some momentum toward the rest of the spring.
UNF rallied on the second day of the John Hayt Collegiate at Sawgrass Country Club, vaulting into second place before closing out the tournament in a tie with SEC foe Tennessee on the final day of play.
On the individual side. UNF's Michael O'Neal was the most consistent performer for the Ospreys all week, cashing in at the end of the tournament with a tie for second place.
This is UNF's first trip to the Rio Pinar and will complete the Ospreys' Florida swing. UNF opened the spring tournament schedule with a trip to Gainesville for the SunTrust Gator Invitational before hosting the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational this past week in Ponte Vedra Beach.
Schedule: Feb. 25-26 (Monday: 2 rounds, 36 holes, Tuesday: 1 round, 18 holes)
Last Season: This is UNF's first trip to the Rio Pinar.
Who's Hot: MIcheal O'Neal did not fire a round above par last week, opening the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational with a 2-under-par 70 before firing two rounds of 72 to close the event … Jeff Dennis recorded a 68 at the Gator Invitational and a 69 at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational for his first two rounds in the 60 this season … his second round 69 at the Hayt tied him for the second best round of the tournament.
Notables: UNF recorded its best finish (t3) at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational last week since 2004 when the team finished third … O'Neal's second-place finish tied his career best finish as an individual and marked the second time in the last four years an Osprey has finished in a tie for second … former UNF golfer Felipe Aguilar won the European Tour's Indonesian Open last week for his first career win on the tour … UNF has moved up to 50th in the latest Golfstat rankings.
