Freshman DeVon Jones leads UNF with career-best 20 points
BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Kelvin McConnell scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half and hit five 3-pointers in leading Kennesaw State to a 63-54 win over homestanding North Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action on Thursday night.
Kennesaw State (8-19, 5-8) trailed for much of the first half but got a McConnell 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 31-29 halftime lead. UNF (2-24, 0-13 A-Sun) answered with a 7-0 run to start the second half to build a 38-33 with 17:24 remaining.
From there, the Owls took control. A pair of baskets by Ronell Wooten sparked a 7-0 run over the next three minutes for Kennesaw State and pushed the Owls back in front. An 8-2 run pushed KSU up 53-47 with 5:50 to play.
UNF never got close than six points down the stretch against their former Division II and Peach Belt Conference rivals.
Freshman DeVon Jones led UNF with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Cortez Riley added 13 points off the bench for the Ospreys.
Kennesaw State shot 45 percent and hit 6-of-21 shots from 3-point range. UNF shot 44 percent and held a 33-31 rebounding edge. The Ospreys committed 19 turnovers.
"I thought we played well enough defensively to win the game," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "We just didn't make enough plays on the offensive end when we needed them. We had a shot to cut their lead to a point more than once over the final eight minutes and couldn't hit the shot."
Three other KSU players scored in double figures, including Jon-Michael Nickerson with 14 points, Shuan Stegall with 13 points and Ronell Wooten with 10.
UNF returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to Mercer on Senior Day at UNF Arena. Seniors Chris Timberlake, James Grimball and Jonson Yousefzadeh will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Tipoff is set for 4:15 p.m., with the UNF women to face Mercer at 2 p.m.
