JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-26) decision to Mercer on Saturday at UNF Arena in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Seniors Maegan Weisert and Claire Yonutas both had double-doubles for UNF (3-14, 1-2 A-Sun). Weisert tallied 11 kills and 11 digs, while Yonutas notched team-highs of 12 kills and 14 digs. Yonutas also tallied eight assists. Junior Nikki Prock recorded 13 digs, and freshman Madeline Belvin had 29 assists.
Mercer (4-12, 2-1) outhit the Lady Ospreys .262 to .191. The Bears were led by Jen Darty's .448 hitting percentage (16-3-29) and match-high 16 kills.
UNF grabbed a quick 3-2 lead in the first game on a kill by freshman Kaley Read, but it was the last advantage the Lady Ospreys saw. Mercer went on a 7-4 run to take a 10-6 lead. UNF fought back to pull to within 11-10, but the Lady Ospreys weren't able to surge ahead, and Mercer went on to seal the win.
A ball-handling error by Mercer's Kelly Jansen gave the Lady Ospreys an early 2-1 lead in game two, but the Bears took control and didn't let UNF get ahead the rest of the way. Mercer went up by as many as seven before the Lady Ospreys pulled to within three of the Bears lead. But it was the closest UNF got, and an attack error by Yonutas allowed Mercer to claim the second game.
Things looked up for the Lady Ospreys in game three when UNF went on a 5-0 run that was highlighted by kills from Weisert and senior Amy Stroder to take a 12-7 lead. But Mercer again took momentum and went on a 9-2 run to claim a 16-14 lead. UNF twice pulled to within one of the Bears' advantage, but it couldn't get over the hump, and Mercer sealed the match.
UNF will return to action at 7 p.m. in non-conference action against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla.
