STATESBORO, Ga. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team wasn't able to get a consistent spark going on the second day of the Georgia Southern Invitational on Saturday and went 0-2 with losses to Georgia and Stetson.
UNF (0-3) was led by junior Kavie Sturch, who had 14 kills and 12 digs on the day. Senior Maegan Weisert led the Lady Ospreys on defense with 18 digs. Freshman Kaley Read chipped in with 12 kills while junior Bary Rasmussen had 11.
The Lady Ospreys began the day with a 30-12, 30- 11, 30-24 loss to Georgia. UNF committed 27 errors in the match and had a -.020 hitting percentage. The team got off to a strong start against the Bulldogs, keeping neck-and-neck until UG went on a 10-1 run to take a 16-6 lead. UNF didn't get any closer than 10 points down the stretch. The Bulldogs got off to a fast start in the second game, starting out with a 9-0 lead before UNF got on the board with a kill from Sturch.
Despite being in a 2-0 hole, UNF came out with a chip on its shoulder in the third game and put the pressure on UG. After falling behind 18-11, the Lady Ospreys fought back to pull to within 23-21. But UG found a groove at the right time and went on a 7-3 run to close out the match.
The Lady Ospreys gave Stetson all it could handle in UNF's second match, but the Hatters stayed more consistent and pulled out the victory by scores of 30- 27, 30-25, 30-9. UNF took a 13-8 lead early in the first game, but a 6-1 run helped Stetson get back in it and tie the match at 14. With the game deadlocked at 24, the Hatters closed out the game on a 6-3 run.
In the second game, the Lady Ospreys fell behind 20-15 before coming back to pull to within 22-20. But Stetson again put together string of consistent points and was able to close out the game on an 8-5 run. The Hatters took control early in the third game, jumping out to a 13-3 lead, and the Lady Ospreys were never able to recover. UNF hit .094 in the match and had 23 errors.
UNF will look to bounce back at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Labor Day Classic against Southeast Missouri State at UNF Arena.
