Heavy rains damper Ospreys

Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga. - Pouring rains put a damper on the day of the University of North Florida baseball team, with the Ospreys dropping game one of a doubleheader to Kennesaw State, and game two was postponed on Saturday at Stillwell Stadium.

UNF (15-22, 6-7 Atlantic Sun Conference) struggled to get starting senior lefty Brad Johnson the runs he needed in game one. Johnson allowed a respectable three runs on seven hits while striking out five in 6.2 innings, and the Ospreys left nine runners on base in a 4-2 loss.

The Ospreys held two leads in the game, getting on the board first in the top of the second inning when sophomore center fielder Brian Wilson was able to beat out a dribbler down the first base line and freshman TJ Thompson scored.

UNF took its other lead when the score was knotted at one in the top of the fifth when senior right fielder Jon Dandridge blasted a sacrifice fly that helped redshirt freshman Mycal Jones score.

But the Ospreys let their lead squander away when the Owls went on to tie the score at two in the bottom of the fifth, and then they added runs in the seventh and the eighth innings. Johnson was knocked out of the game with two outs in the seventh and junior Travis Martin finished the inning. Sophomore closer Tyler Stohr entered the game in the eighth inning and took care of business, striking out one in an inning of work.

Wilson ended up with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville went 2-for-3.

Things got soggy in game two for UNF. The cats and dogs made their appearance in the third inning, and a 30-minute rain delay was declared. Shortly after the delay was over, the Ospreys got off to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Thompson's single to center sent senior catcher James Belyea rumbling across the plate.

Kennesaw (19-15, 3-7) was able to keep the field just dry enough to knot the score at one in the bottom of the sixth before the game was called due to unplayable conditions. UNF senior right-handed starting pitcher Derek Bell had another outstanding outing, allowing one run on five hits in six innings while striking out three. The game was called shortly after Bell had difficulty getting solid footing on the mound and slipped on one of his pitches.

The game will continue in progress at 12 p.m. tomorrow. One runner was on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh at the time of the game's postponement. After that game is finished, the teams will conclude the series at approximately 1 p.m. Live stats and audio will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
