JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team ended the weekend on a positive note on Sunday with an 8-5 win over Stetson at Harmon Stadium in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
UNF (10-14, 1-2 A-Sun) was led at the plate by junior designated hitter Travis Martin, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a run scored. Junior second baseman Chad Knight finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and two walks. Freshman starting LHP John Atteo (2-2) had another strong outing, hurling six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits.
The Ospreys didn't waste any time jumping all over the Hatters (17-7, 2-1), as UNF took a 6-0 lead after the bottom of the first. UNF was assisted by the inaccuracy of Stetson's starting pitcher Justin Dechert, who lasted just a third of an inning. Redshirt freshman shortstop Mycal Jones was the first to score a run, as he crossed the plate when senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Senior right fielder Jon Dandridge drove in another run on his sacrifice fly to center field that allowed sophomore center fielder Brian Wilson to score. Knight and Glanville were able to advance to second and third base on an errant throw by SU's Justin Bass. The error set up a sacrifice fly RBI for senior catcher James Belyea, whose deep fly ball drove in Knight. Martin capped off the scoring with a two-out, two-run double to left center that drove in Glanville and senior left fielder Damon Olinto. When it was all wrapped up, the Ospreys were able to bat around in an inning for the first time this season.
Things kept quiet on the scoreboard until the fourth and fifth innings when Stetson scored two runs to pull within 6-2. The Hatters pulled closer in the sixth with two more runs, but the Ospreys were able to counter with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Knight got it going with a double that bounced over the head of SU's third baseman and down the left field line, which allowed Wilson to advance to third after leading off the inning with a walk.
Dandridge drove in the second of his two RBIs with a single through the right side of the infield that allowed Wilson to score. Knight was able to score when SU's right fielder let the ball get past him on an error.
Senior RHP Derek Bell helped hold the lead after Atteo's exit from the game. Bell allowed just one unearned run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Sophomore RHP Tyler Stohr entered the game in the top of the eighth with one out and the tying runner on deck and shut down every hitter he faced to pick up his fourth save of the year. Stohr's final line was 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and no hits allowed.
The Ospreys will step out of conference play with a showdown against in-state foe South Florida from the Big East Conference at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Tampa, Fla. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
