JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team churned out 10 hits but left 11 runners on base in a 9-1 loss to Stetson in the Ospreys' Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Friday night at Harmon Stadium.
UNF (9-13, 0-1 A-Sun) was led by redshirt freshman shortstop Mycal Jones at the plate with his 3-for-5 performance. Senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville went 2-for-4 with a home run for UNF's lone run. With his performance, Glanville extended his hitting streak to nine games.
The Ospreys kept it close down 3-1 until the top of the ninth inning, when the Hatters (16-6, 1-0) exploded for six runs. Redshirt freshmen RHPs Tucker Pryor and Jonathan Turner combined to allow the inning's runs. Stetson hammered out six hits in the inning, including two damaging infield singles.
Stetson got on the board first in the top of the sixth inning, then added another run in the top of the seventh to take a 2-0 lead, but the Ospreys battled back with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Glanville blasted his second home run of the season to left field to cut the lead to 2-1
UNF was able to load the bases later in the inning when freshman T.J. Thompson reached on a walk, Jones launched a two-out double down the right field line and junior Chad Knight was hit by a pitch. But a flyout to right field by senior left fielder Damon Olinto ended the rally.
Senior LHP Brad Johnson (2-3) pitched well enough to keep UNF in the game, but the Ospreys didn't show any life at the plate until his departure. Johnson allowed two runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Ospreys will continue the three-game series with Stetson at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Harmon Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WIOJ-AM 1010 in Jacksonville. Audio and live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
