JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team took a little longer than usual on Tuesday night to wrap up a victory against Indiana at Harmon Stadium in the 2007 Kennel Club Classic.
It took UNF (9-11) 16 innings to score the winning run in a 10-9 victory in a game that lasted four hours and 41 minutes. The Ospreys batted through the full lineup almost nine times and combined for 66 at-bats. UNF found plenty of offense with its season-high 23 hits, most of which came in the late innings.
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the 16th inning, senior right fielder Jon Dandridge blasted a deep fly ball to right center that ended up being the game-winning double, driving in senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville.
Dandridge had a monster night, finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Redshirt freshman RHP Jonathan Turner picked up the win after throwing the last four innings for the Ospreys and allowing just one hit while striking out one. Redshirt freshman Tucker Pryor helped hold the Ospreys in the game, carrying UNF into the 13th innings after going 3.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out three.
Indiana (4-8) ended up using 23 players in the game, including six pitchers. The Hoosiers trailed 5-1 in the top of the ninth, but a giant seven-run inning in which UNF had to use three pitchers in relief of senior RHP starter Derek Bell put them ahead 8-5.
But the Ospreys were able to make the improbable comeback, getting an RBI single from redshirt freshman Mycal Jones and a two-run error by IU that helped UNF tie the game at eight.
The Hoosiers went ahead again in the top of the tenth on an infield RBI single by Andrew Means to put them ahead 9-8. UNF didn't buy into it. The Ospreys tied it again in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Dandridge that drove in senior catcher James Belyea that tied it at nine.
Bell had his start spoiled, as he left the top of the ninth with a 5-1 lead, just missing the complete game. Bell went 8.1 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out eight.
Jones finished with a career-high five hits and drove in two runs.
UNF returns to action at 7 p.m. tomorrow night against Indiana at Harmon Stadium in the final contest of a two-game series. The game will be broadcast live on WIOJ-AM 1010 in Jacksonville.
