JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team continued with its torrid start to the 2007 season and avenged its lone conference loss from a year ago by upending Stetson 5-2 at the UNF Tennis Complex on Thursday.
The Lady Ospreys took wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to capture the doubles point out of the gates, and then got victories at the bottom four positions in singles to improve to 6-0 this season and 2-0 in A-Sun play.
UNF's Natalia Sanchez knocked off Stetson's Katherine Nowicki at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6- 3, and Florencia Torres defeated Anna Leonenko, 6- 1, 6-4, at the No. 4 position for the Lady Ospreys. Ina Durcakova cruised past Stetson's Catherine Canady at the No. 5 position (7-5, 6-0), and Robin Rogers collected a win for UNF at the No. 6 spot by getting past Natalie Gorham, 6-1, 7-5.
UNF's Catalina Castillo lost at No. 2 singles and Vanessa Sanchez at the No. 1 position for the Lady Ospreys, but both came in third-set tiebreaks after the match had been decided.
"I think we had a great day of tennis," UNF assistant coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "We knew Stetson was going to come out and play their best, and our girls played at a high level. We are playing well at the moment, but there is still room for us to improve. We have a tough road ahead of us, and these matches are helping us to build our confidence for the rest of our season."
UNF will take a 12-day break before returning to action on Feb. 20 against UCF at the UNF Tennis Complex. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
