Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team decided to start the season over on Friday and did so in dominating fashion, hammering the Towson Tigers for a season-high 15 hits in a 9-1 win at Harmon Stadium.

UNF (1-7) grabbed its first win of the season after facing a tough schedule that included three ranked teams. The Ospreys latched on to the strong performance of senior starting LHP Brad Johnson (1-2), who pitched seven innings of mistake-free ball. Johnson mowed the Tigers down, striking out eight and allowing just one run on five hits.

Senior center fielder Damon Olinto led the platoon of runs, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Redshirt freshman shortstop Mycal Jones also had two RBIs and one run scored while finishing 2-for-6 at the plate.

The teams locked each other down through the first two innings, holding each other scoreless. But the Ospreys poured it on in the bottom of the third, with senior second baseman Chad Knight scoring on a bases loaded wild pitch. Olinto drove in junior designated hitter Travis Martin in the next at-bat to make it 2-0.

Senior right fielder Jon Dandridge helped give Towson's starting pitcher Jon Dupski the hook after hitting a bases loaded single to right field that allowed senior catcher James Belyea to score. Jones capped off the onslaught with an RBI bunt single to give UNF a 5-0 lead.

Olinto added another run in the bottom of the sixth when he stroked an RBI single through the right side of the infield. UNF padded its lead in the bottom of the seventh, adding three more runs.

Freshman RHP Paul Morales, who has played solid at third base this season, made his collegiate debut on the mound in relief of Johnson. Morales looked like a seasoned veteran, throwing nasty sidearm breaking pitches that helped him strike out three and allow only one hit in two innings to close out the game.

The Ospreys will try to the keep train rolling at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Harmon Stadium for game two against Towson. Live stats for the game will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
