BOCA RATON, Fla.- The
University of North Florida softball team finished the
second day of play at the FAU Miken Invitational with
a split, defeating Miami (Ohio) 2-1 in nine innings
after dropping the first game of the day 2-0 to UCF.
Katie Brosky ran her record to 2-0 on the young
season, winning a battle of ragged arms with Miami's
Meredith Linch. Each pitcher threw more than 150
pitches in the nine-inning contest, with UNF pulling it
out after a pair of Linch wild pitches led to a UNF run
in the top of the ninth.
"Katie Brosky threw a good game and the defense
played well behind her," UNF head coach Sonya
wilmoth said. "I'm most impressed with the way we
battled back after losing the first game of the day."
Brosky allowed only two hitsm while striking out five and walking three. Gwen Williams helped her secure the win, making
a diving catch in short right field on a liner off the
bat of Miami's Sarah Billstrom. That catch ended the
contest, stranding a Miami runner on third base.
The Lady Ospreys (2-2) opened the scoring against
Miami in the top of the second inning when Ashley Parenteau drove home Mallory Butler with an RBI
double down the left field line.
The Redhawks tied the game with an unearned run in
the bottom of the third when Ashley Nieman scored
on a Heather Hyde error. All four runs that Brosky
has allowed this season have been unearned.
Each team stranded a runner at third in the eighth
inning before Amy Higgs scored the game winner in
the ninth, moving from second to home on a pair of
wild pitches.
Williams extended her hitting streak to four games
with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
Allison Kime was a one-woman wrecking crew for UCF
in the opener. Kime pitched a complete game two-
hitter, while driving in what turned out to be the
game winner and scoring a run on top of that.
Kime (2-0) and Tori Ahern (0-2) battled back and
forth for the first five innings of action before Ahern
was finally touched for a pair of runs. C.C. Alvarez
started UCF's rally in the fifth with a double before
eventually moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Kime
drove her home two batters later with an RBI single
to left before scoring on a Shelly Frick double.
UNF threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth
after Williams led off the inning with a single and
eventually moved to third on a Lauren Pulling base
hit. She was stranded there, however, as UNF only
had five baserunners in the game. Williams and Pulling
collected the only hits for UNF.
The Lady Ospreys will conclude play at FAU on
Sunday.
