Volleyball takes Rattlers down to wire

Ospreys hold early leads in first three games

Final Stats

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team became just the third team since 2002 to take Florida A&M to four games at home, but the Ospreys came up just short in a 3-1 loss (25-30, 30-27, 22-30, 27-30) on Tuesday.

Seniors Maegan Weisert and Claire Yonutas both had a double-double for fourth time this season overall, and it was the second the duo did it against FAMU. Weisert had a team-high 18 kills along with 15 digs. Yonutas tallied 14 kills and 16 digs. Junior Bary Rasmussen notched nine kills along with a career-high nine blocks.

UNF (4-25) outhit the Rattlers .161 to .150 but recorded 31 attack errors and 19 service errors. The Ospreys also led in blocks 9.5 to 8.0 and held an early lead in three games.

The Ospreys jumped out a 6-2 lead in the first game, led by kills from Rasmussen and Weisert. UNF went up 10-7 on an ace from Yonutas, but FAMU battled back to tie it at 10 when freshman Kaley Read had two consecutive attack errors.

UNF held strong at the net and used two blocks from Rasmussen and freshman Madeline Belvin to help the team retake the lead and go up 18-13. But the Rattlers clamped down and went on a 9-2 run to take a 22-20 lead. FAMU was able to keep its momentum going and outscore the Ospreys 8-5 to win game one.

Despite letting the game one lead slip away, UNF held on to its intensity and went up early in the second game, getting out to a 6-2 advantage on a kill from freshman Marshay Greenlee. FAMU came back to keep the game deadlocked for most of the way and later went up 24-22.

The Ospreys regrouped and went on a 5-0 run to go up 27-24. UNF scored its 27th point on a triple block from Rasmussen, Yonutas and Greenlee. Read sealed the game two win on two consecutive kills and tied the match at one.

UNF once again got out to an early in the third game, going up 4-1 on an ace from Read. The Rattlers battled back to tie the match, where it stayed until FAMU went on an 8-2 run to go up 18-12. The Ospreys weren't able to battle back and could only pull to within six the rest of the way.

FAMU looked primed to make game four short, going up 11-8. But UNF refused to quit and scored the next three points, led by two Weisert kills, to tie it at 11. The Rattlers then went on a 10-4 run to take a 21-15 lead, but the Ospreys kept the intensity rolling and came back to tie it at 25 on kills from Greenlee and Yonutas. Despite the impressive comeback, the Rattlers were able to take advantage of their home-court advantage and close out the game and match on a 5-2 run.

Read finished with 13 kills, while Belvin recorded 45 assists. Freshman Tara Gilbreath notched a season-high 16 digs. The Ospreys' 89 digs were their most in a four-game match this season.

The Ospreys will close out their season at 7 p.m. on Thursday at UNF Arena against Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble. It will be Senior/Parents Night, where Weisert and Yonutas will be honored before the match. It will also mark the 25th-Anniversary Celebration event for volleyball. All-time program greats will be honored at intermission, and there be will be special promotions to commemorate the event.
