Maegan Weisert tallied 16 kills and 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season but it was not enough for the University of North Florida women's volleyball team to overtake Florida Gulf Coast in a 3-0 loss (23-30, 18-30, 23-30) on Friday night at UNF Arena.
UNF (4-23) hit .131 for the match, led by Weisert's mark of .225. Junior
Bary Rasmussen notched five kills and two blocks, while senior
Claire Yonutas dropped in seven kills.
The Lady Ospreys stormed out and put the pressure on FGCU to take an early 5-4 lead in game one. Two kills from Weisert helped UNF grab the advantage. The Eagles answered by tying to the score and going up by as many as two, but the Lady Ospreys battled back to tie it again at 12 on a service error by FGCU's Ana Kokanovic.
The deadlock didn't last long. The Eagles took control of the game and went on a 13-5 run to take a 26-17 lead to put UNF out of contention and take a 1-0 match lead. The Lady Ospreys were held to an .093 hitting percentage in the first game.
FGCU (22-2) handled the momentum in the early moments of game two and took a 12-8 lead. UNF bounced back to score the next three points on a service error by Kokanovic, an ace by Weisert and a kill by freshman
Marshay Greenlee to pull to within 12-11 But the Eagles continued their constant pressure and were able to outscore the Lady Ospreys 18-7 the rest of the way and go up 2-0 in the match.
The Eagles didn't let up in the third game, hitting .314 and blasting 15 kills. UNF put up a strong fight and had their best game of the night, hitting .222 and putting down 16 kills, led by Weisert's six. The Lady Ospreys fell behind by as many as eight before going on a 5-1 run to pull to within 24-20, but FGCU was able to stifle the rally and outscore UNF 6-3 to claim the match.
Freshman Madeline Belvin recorded 30 assists, while junior
Nikki Prock had 10 digs.
