JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's basketball team will play its 2007-08 home opener tonight against a familiar foe - Concordia College from New York. In what has become a Division I tradition at UNF, the Ospreys will welcome the Division II Clippers to UNF Arena for the third straight season.
Tonight's game is being sponsored by Fidelity Investments, with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
Last year's meeting went down to the wire, with the Ospreys pulling away for a 77-72 win behind 20 points from Rashad Williams and 12 points from Germaine Sparkes. Richard Fields led the way for Concordia with 23 points.
UNF comes into tonight's game on the heels of a weekend swing through College Park, Md., in the opening rounds of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. The Ospreys faced ACC power Maryland and Conference USA standout Tulsa. The Ospreys led in both games but faltered down the stretch.
A pair of newcomers led the way during the team's first two games, with junior transfer Tom Hammonds (East Carolina) averaging 15.5 points and seven rebounds per game and freshman Justin Cecil averaging 13.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while sinking 5-of-11 from 3-point range.
UNF plays at defending national champion Florida on Tuesday night in Gainesville.
