UNF battles weather, UNF, FAU over weekend at UCF Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's tennis team battled inclement weather and a pair of tough opponents this past weekend at the UCF Invitational in Orlando in a four-team event that featured UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic and the Ospreys.

UNF faced off against players from host UCF on Friday, winning one of three doubles matches and once in six singles matchups. Yuiti Lopes and Andres Monje took a hard- fought 7-5 victory over UCF's Jimmy Roesch and Blaze Schwartz for the doubles win, while Eduardo Pereira notched a 6-4, 7-5 victory over UCF's Claudio Romano in singles.

After rains forced postponement of Saturday's UNF matches against in-state foe Florida Atlantic, the teams dodged inclement weather long enough on Sunday to finish their six singles matchups, where the Ospreys won twice in six matches. Pereira captured his second win of the weekend, taking a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 win over FAU's Marc Abdelnour, while Kurt Gattiker knocked off Osvaldo Benitez, 7-6, 3-6, 10-4 for the other Osprey win. Pereira was 2-0 in the round-robin "B Flight" competition, which was shortened due to rain.

The Ospreys cancelled their trip to the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee scheduled for this weekend.
