CONWAY, S.C. - The University of North Florida volleyball team capped a difficult weekend at the Coastal Carolina Classic on Saturday with a pair of losses - first to Xavier 3-1 in a morning match and then 3-2 to Coastal Carolina in the tournament finale.
The losses drop UNF (7-7) to .500 for the season and give the Lady Ospreys their first three- match losing streak since September 2005.
Against Xavier (5-7), the Lady Ospreys got 20 kills from junior Amy Stroder and 58 assists from Jenna Thomas but those performances weren't enough to overcome a blistering effort by the Musketeers. Xavier hit a whopping .339 with 78 kills and got 25 kills from Danielle Skrajewski to hold off UNF.
The Lady Ospreys hit .260 and committed just 18 errors but couldn't muster key points when they needed them in games three and four. Maegan Weisert added 16 kills and Magen Wood 13 for UNF.
Against Coastal Carolina (3-8), the Lady Ospreys got a breakout performance from Allison O'Neill but couldn't hold a two-point lead in the final game in dropping their third straight match.
O'Neill tallied 14 kills and hit .522 for the match to lead UNF while also collecting thee blocks. Amy Stroder and Emily Kohler had 16 kills each.
The teams split the first four games, with the Lady Ospreys taking games two and four to force a decisive game five. UNF led 11-9 in the finale but couldn't hold it. A pair of UNF errors allowed the Chanticleers to tie the match, and Coastal eventually pulled away for a 15-13 win.
Jenna Thomas tallied a career-high 62 assists to pace the UNF attack, while Tara Taylor added 34 digs. Kohler added 21 digs and Stroder 17.
UNF returns to action next weekend when it travels to play in the IPFW Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Lady Ospreys will face South Dakota State on Friday and Texas-Pan American and IPFW on Saturday.
