TROY, Ala. - The University of North Florida volleyball team endured a difficult start to its 2006 season on Friday night in the opening round of the Troy University/Hampton Inn `Spiketacular' at Trojan Arena, falling 3-0 to Tulsa (30-24, 30-19, 30-27).
The Lady Ospreys got 16 kills from junior Maegan Weisert but couldn't overcome a poor hitting night in falling to the Golden Hurricanes in the season opener for both teams. UNF hit just .107 for the match and committed 25 errors.
Amy Stroder added 10 kills, Jenna Thomas 31 assists and Tara Taylor 17 digs for UNF, but it wasn't enough to overcome a rash of unforced errors.
UNF tallied 16 kills and held Tulsa to just eight in game one, but 10 errors and four service errors put the Lady Ospreys in an early hole. Tulsa heated up in game two for an easy victory, and a late rally fell just short in game three for UNF.
The Golden Hurricanes hit .197 for the match.
"We had a lot of hitting errors and a lot of unforced errors," UNF head coach Bryan Bunn said. "We didn't play with very much energy. We have higher expectations of ourselves and how we perform. I am hoping that tomorrow we can come out with much more purpose."
The Lady Ospreys will cap their weekend trip with a pair of games on Saturday, facing Saint Mary's at 10 a.m. ET and host Troy at 3 p.m.
