South Carolina State Results l Charleston Southern Results
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The North Florida women's tennis team got back on track in the final match of its road swing through South Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Ospreys upended Charleston Southern 4-0 to erase the bad taste of a 4-3 loss to South Carolina State on Saturday, which snapped a seven-match winning streak.
On Sunday, the Lady Ospreys (12-6) breezed to their eighth win in nine matches, however, getting singles wins from Vanessa Sanchez (No. 1), Katja Brandt (No. 3) and Robin Rogers (No. 6). UNF opened the day by winning the doubles point, and the match was called after the Lady Ospreys had secured the victory. Charleston Southern fell to 5-12.
"We are definitely playing our best tennis at the end of the season, which is what you want," UNF assistant coach Julie Stoppelli said. "It was good to see the girls bounce back after the loss yesterday. We just want to continue playing well as the season enters its final weeks."
Against South Carolina State, the Lady Ospreys dropped the doubles point but nearly rallied for the win against the Lady Bulldogs (13-1).
UNF captured singles victories from Florencia Torres (No. 3), Katja Brandt (No. 4) and Lauren Cockbill (No. 5). The match came down to a tight battle between UNF's Vanessa Sanchez and SCSU's Mirian Cruz at the No. 1 position. Sanchez served for match point four times but couldn't get over the top, eventually losing in a third-set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
UNF is not eligible for postseason play this season under NCAA rules as the program transitions to Division I. The Lady Ospreys have just three matches remaining - at Rollins on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., at home against Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 2 p.m. and at Troy on Sunday at 10 a.m.
