JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida volleyball team capped its 2006 home season - and the squad's "Senior Day" - with a 3-1 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Campbell on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena (30- 24, 25-30, 30-23, 31-29).
The victory was UNF's fifth straight at home and its fifth win in the last six matches, but it didn't come easily.
Senior Magen Wood led the way for the Lady Ospreys (15-14, 6-1 A-Sun) with 13 kills and three blocks while hitting .435. Maegan Weisert tallied 15 kills and Emily Kohler and Amy Stroder had 12 kills each for UNF.
Neither team was sharp offensively. UNF hit just .160 as a team, while Campbell (11-15, 2-6 A- Sun) hit .107. A strong serve and 14 blocks helped keep the Camels in the match. Campbell - which had 13 aces - rallied from a 27-22 deficit to tie game four at 29, but the Lady Ospreys got a pair of breaks on Campbell errors after that to clinch the match victory.
Before that, the teams split a pair of tight games to open the match, and UNF cruised to an easy win in game three.
Campbell's Femi Alabi led the Camels with 19 kills while hitting .368 with six blocks, and Rachel Templin added 15 kills and hit .333. She also tallied six blocks.
"It was a win, and we'll take it," UNF head coach Bryan Bunn said. "It was good to end our season at home with a victory. Magen Wood played a great match, and it was nice to send our seniors out in style. Now we're looking forward to a tough match with Belmont on Friday in Nashville."
With Saturday's win, the Lady Ospreys pulled into a tie with Belmont for second place in the league standings, one game back of first-place East Tennessee State. The Lady Ospreys play the Bruins on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Nashville before facing Lipscomb on Saturday, also in the Music City.
UNF's Jenna Thomas paced the Lady Ospreys attack against Campbell, collecting 45 assists, and she added 10 digs defensively. Senior libero Tara Taylor had 24 digs and needs only 60 more digs to become the school's career leader.
The team's seniors - Wood, Kohler, Taylor, Thomas and Allison O'Neill - were each honored in a pregame ceremony on Saturday.
