JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Learning on the job can be painful.
The youthful North Florida volleyball team learned another tough lesson on Wednesday afternoon at UNF Arena, running into an Eastern Washington buzz saw.
UNF fell 3-0 to the Eagles, the defending Big Sky Conference champion, after EWU hit .328 for the match and got mammoth efforts from Brittney Page and Ashley Jensen. Page hit .650 and tallied 14 kills, while Jensen hit .556 with 16 kills, helping hand UNF its third consecutive loss - the program's first three-game skid since 1999.
UNF (3-3) played the Eagles (5-2) tough in all three games, losing 30-26, 30-21 and 30-27.
"I thought we showed a lot of heart and played hard," UNF head coach Bryan Bunn said. "We had some breakdowns in the system and lost some key points in games one and two. We have a lot of young people out there, and they battled hard against a good team. You have to endure those learning experiences to get better."
Crystie Collora finished with a team-high 10 kills for UNF, hitting .261. The Lady Ospreys hit just .142, despite coming out red-hot in game one.
Both teams came out firing in the first game and battled back and forth early on. UNF led 17-15 but couldn't hold the advantage. A pair of points from Kerri Beck and back-to-back service aces by Mandy Daniels pushed the Eagles ahead 23-19 and they never trailed again. UNF sliced its deficit to 27- 25, but a pair of errors by the Lady Ospreys ended the game.
UNF hit .257 with 15 kills in game one, while the Eagles hit .405 with 18 kills.
In games two and three, UNF cooled considerably, hitting just .133 and .049, respectively.
Freshman setter Heather Kendrick directed the UNF attack with 29 digs, while Kelly Kazmierczak and Jennifer King tied for the team lead with nine digs apiece.
The Lady Ospreys' road doesn't get any easier in the next week. UNF travels to the Winthrop Tournament this weekend in Rock Hill, S.C., to face Big Ten foe Indiana on Friday and then defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop on Saturday afternoon before facing Furman.
