ROCK HILL, S.C. - The University of North Florida volleyball team capped its trip to the Winthrop Invitational with a pair of losses on Saturday, falling 3-0 to host Winthrop and then 3-1 to Furman at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Lady Ospreys (3-6) endured another difficult day on the attack, hitting just .119 in the opener against Winthrop and only .146 against Furman. UNF had 13 reception errors in its first match to aid in the demise, while 30 attack errors against the Palladins eventually proved too much to overcome in match two.
Against Furman (2-4), three Lady Ospreys finished with double-figure kills, led by Magen Wood's 13. Emily Kohler and Heather Kendrick each tallied 11 kills, helping UNF win game one, 30-28. The teams battled back and forth in game two before Furman eventually pulled away for a 31-29 victory. Behind a 23-kill performance from Chibuzo Aguocha, the Palladins then swept games three and four, 30-27 and 30-25.
Furman hit only.184 for the match and recorded 35 errors, but 11 blocks and a strong game four (.341 hitting percentage) proved key in the win. Furman setter Courtney Stewardson had 54 assists.
Against Winthrop (4-3), UNF fell 30-20 in all three games. Freshman Crystie Collora was the only UNF player with double figures in kills (10). Emily Kohler had nine and hit .273 for the Lady Ospreys.
That was enough to overcome a strong performance by the Eagles, however, who hit .369 and got 14 kills from Taryn Surbaugh. Mary Hock (13) and Tori Grafeman (12) also finished with double figures in kills.
The road doesn't get any easier for UNF, which has lost six straight matches. The Lady Ospreys travel to the South Alabama Tournament in Mobile next weekend to face Ole Miss, South Alabama and Southern Miss.
