Lady Ospreys get past Troy, 3-1

Aug. 26, 2005

Box Score

TROY, Ala. - The University of North Florida volleyball team opened its 2005 season - and the program's Division I era - on Friday night at the Trojan Spiketacular looking for a clue to what 2005 will bring.

After a close 3-1 win over host Troy University (30- 22, 26-30, 30-28, 30-28), questions still remain, according to UNF head coach Bryan Bunn, but not about the Lady Ospreys' ability to overcome adversity.

UNF hit just .170 but got strong performances from freshman setter Heather Kendrick, junior opposite hitter Emily Kohler and senior outside hitter Kelly Kazmierczak to win its season opener for the fourth consecutive year and the fifth time in six seasons under Bunn.

Kendrick tallied 46 assists and six kills, while Kohler hit .286 and finished with 14 kills. Kazmierczak finished with 13 kills, including two late in game four that helped UNF clinch the victory.

"We showed a lot of heart," UNF head coach Bryan Bunn said. "We had a big lead and lost it in game three, but still managed to win. Then we waited through a long delay in game four but found a way to hold on and close it out. I was proud of how we responded in those situations."

The bad news started early for UNF when returning starter Maegan Weisert suffered a foot injury during warm-ups, which forced her to the bench. After winning game one and dropping game two, the Lady Ospreys then raced out to a 22-13 lead in game three before allowing Troy (0-1) to battle back and slice its deficit to a single point three times. UNF eventually won, 30-28, getting a kill from Kazmierczak and two Troy errors to end the game.

In game four, UNF waited through a 15-minute delay while game officials sorted out a Troy rotation error. UNF trailed 19-16 at one point in the game, and the teams were tied three times after that before Kazmierczak came to rescue again - recording a pair of kills in the final three points to put the match away.

Jennifer King had 12 kills to go along with three service aces for UNF, while freshman Bary Rasmussen recorded six blocks and Jenna Thomas had 25 digs. Troy's Liz Schaab finished with 15 kills to lead the Trojans.

The Lady Ospreys will continue play in the Trojan Spiketacular on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET when they face Samford. UNF opens its home season next Friday against Charleston Southern at 7:30 p.m.
