JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida volleyball team had never posted a losing record in its first 14 seasons of competition. On Friday night at UNF Arena, the Lady Ospreys kept history on their side.
UNF hit a season-best .320 and tallied only 10 attack errors - a season low - in dispatching Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-23). The win broke a fourth-place tie between the teams in the A-Sun standings and assured that UNF (15-9, 6-2 A-Sun) cannot finish below .500 in its first season as a Division I program. Wins in their final five matches will give the Lady Ospreys an eighth- straight 20-win season.
"Jennifer King, Emily Kohler and Magen Wood all hit the ball very well," UNF head coach Bryan Bunn said. "That was the most important factor in the match. It is always good to win, and I am proud of our effort. Everyone was at the top of their game."
King led UNF with 10 kills and hit .300, while Kohler hit .421 and Wood .450 with nine kills each. Lipscomb (12-17, 5-3 A-Sun) hit just .119 with 24 errors. Alex Scruggs led the Lady Bisons with 12 kills and hit .391, while Catherine Johnson had seven kills in 10 attempts (.700).
Heather Kendrick directed the UNF attack with 40 assists, while Jenna Thomas had 14 digs. Lipscomb's Ann Mullins had 21 digs.
In game one, the teams battled back and forth before UNF finally took control thanks to some shaky play by the Lady Bisons. UNF led 20-19 when Lipscomb committed four consecutive errors. Kelly Kazmierczak's ace pushed UNF ahead 26-19, a lead the Lady Ospreys would not relinquish.
In game two, Lipscomb jumped out in front, leading 14-11 before UNF got hot down the stretch, scoring nine of the game's final 10 points to snap a 21-21 tie. The Lady Ospreys hit .395 for the game with just three errors to help them battle back. King and Kohler each tallied three kills in the winning rally.
UNF never trailed in game three, hitting .295 and getting four kills apiece from King and Wood to put the match away.
Both teams return to action on Saturday afternoon, with UNF facing Belmont at 2 p.m. at UNF Arena and Lipscomb traveling to face Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m.
