MACON, Ga. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team garnered a host of postseason honors for the 2013 season, as six Ospreys were honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference, while Head Coach Adam Schaechterle was named Coach of the Year, as announced by the conference on Thursday.
Senior Moritz Buerchner was named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team for the fourth time in four years, where he was joined by fellow seniors Daniel Sotomarino and Julien Belair. Buerchner was also named the A-Sun Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Freshman Bernardo Craveiro garnered his first collegiate postseason award, as he was named to the All-Freshman Team, while seniors Pedro Davisson and Leonardo Nahar were both named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team as a doubles pair.
Buerchner, who was named UNF's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday, was one of four unanimous choices to the All-A-Sun First Team, the third time in his four-year career that he has been selected unanimously. The senior battled injuries while still carving out a 7-9 record in a season where he faced nine nationally-ranked singles player and notched UNF's first-ever appearance in the ITA National Singles Rankings. Buerchner also paired with sophomore Norbert Nemcsek in the fall en route to an appearance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships and a No. 15 ranking in the ITA National Doubles Rankings.
Sotomarino, who was also named first team all-conference as a junior, served as a steady rock at the No. 2 singles spot for UNF, going 10-8 in dual matches, including a 4-2 mark against A-Sun foes. The senior was an incredibly consistent doubles player in 2013 as well, pairing with multiple Ospreys to accumulate 12 victories at the No. 1 and 2 doubles spots for UNF.
Belair earned his first-ever First Team All-Atlantic Sun honors by turning himself into the conference's toughest player down the stretch, as the senior rolled to 13 consecutive singles wins, all in straight sets, to end the regular season. Playing anywhere in the top four positions, Belair carved out a 16-5 singles record in 2013, including a pristine 8-0 mark in conference play. Belair was just as tough in doubles, as he paired with both Buerchner and sophomore Timo Kranz to win 12 of his last 13 matches at No. 1 and 2 doubles.
In his first collegiate season, Craveiro proved to be a crucial part of the Ospreys' late-season lineup in 2013, winning all four of his Atlantic Sun matches en route to a 5-1 dual match record on the season and All-Freshman Team honors.
Davisson and Nahar paired up to garner Second Team All-Atlantic Sun honors for the second time in their careers, rolling to an 8-3 mark at the No. 3 doubles spot and providing a crucial consistency for the Ospreys as the team won 12 of the final 13 doubles points it competed for. The duo, who earned the same honor in 2011 as sophomores, went 5-1 in conference play, the second-best record for any full-time duo at UNF.
“It's an honor to be recognized by our peers in the Atlantic Sun and to be so well-represented in the conference's postseason awards,” Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. “We're very excited to build on that and have a great weekend at the tournament.”
Schaechterle, in his second season as head coach, has led the Ospreys to new heights in 2013. Facing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation, UNF rolled to a 14-7 record, including a flawless 8-0 mark in the A-Sun, earning Schaechterle his first career Coach of the Year award. The Ospreys went 4-7 against nationally-ranked teams this season, and ended the regular season having won 12 of their final 13 matches.
UNF will seek to earn its first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament this weekend, as it ventures to Johnson City, Tenn. to take part in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Having won the first outright A-Sun Regular Season Championship, the Ospreys enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will kick off their weekend in Saturday's semifinals against either No. 4 Florida Gulf Coast or No. 5 USC Upstate.
